Neofinetia faclata "Tensen" 천섬 天蟾
I follow a trade, buy, and sell Facebook group for Neofinetia.
I figured it was the best way to stay up to date on popular varieties and catch a deal on one that I liked. I was lucky to find a post for a Tensen for $27 for each of two divisions. I wanted one more plant to complete a nice set of three for my little collection.
However, I was very confused at first because when I googled Tensen, there were lots of pictures of a variegated type and the kanji and hangul writing were different. On the Fūkiran Meikan it appeared as 天仙 heaven-hermit 천선 cheonseon or heavenly line (as opposed to 天蟾 heaven-toad 천섬 cheonseom or thousand islands, the names written on the Facebook listing) under the rank 貴品 Kihin "Valuable Varieties". On Pungan, a large Korean database of Fūkiran, it has white variegation on the edges of each leaf. This marginal variegation is called Fukurin 覆輪.
After searching for 천섬 cheonseom instead on Pungan, I discovered that there is another Fūkiran named Tensen but with a different appearance and writing: 천섬(天蟾). It is not found in the Meikan. The pictures matched the ones I received with solid green and sturdy leaves.
Another popular appearance of this particular variety is a mutation. The leaves are shorter and irregular in length and the stem may curve. It is said that its appearance is like a flame.
I'm curious to see how it grows and blooms in my apartment.
